The Challenge & Solution

This backyard was a sloped, unusable stretch of patchy turf the family avoided for most of the year. We terraced the grade behind a curved stone retaining wall, laid a 900 sq ft travertine paver patio, and anchored the whole space with a full masonry outdoor fireplace — a true firebox and chimney, not a prefab insert. A squared gas fire pit and built-in seating face it across the pavers, and lit stone niches carry the room well past dark.
