The Challenge & Solution

The clients entertained often but had nowhere to seat a group once the sun went down. We carved a dedicated outdoor living room out of an underused side yard: a dimensional bluestone patio, a hand-set stone fire pit as the anchor, and a privacy screen of columnar evergreens and hydrangea that makes the space feel enclosed without walling it off from the garden.

"It's our favorite room in the house and it doesn't even have a roof. The privacy plantings were the detail we never would have thought of — you'd never know the neighbors are thirty feet away."
